SAMMC Ortho Brings Care Forward
In September, three SAMMC orthopaedic residents, Tayt Ellison (2021), Jordan Hauschild (2021), and Taylor Bates (2023) participated in an Army MEDRETE Hand/Ortho mission to Tegucigupla, Honduras, led by Julia Nuelle (Fac mbr) as the Commanding Officer.
The MEDRETE team, consisting of 19 service members from multiple MTFs, provided expert surgical care performing 128 orthopaedic surgical procedures in an austere surgical setting, while devising ways to overcome challenges often encountered in deployed environments. The team was also highlighted in a Military Times story. Julia's leadership of the team and the dedication of the residents made this an experience that increases the goodwill shown toward the US and projects the influence of DOD, the US and the orthopaedic profession.
